Rhythm for Your Soul

Come explore the ancient rhythms within yourself! Rhythm for Your Soul will lead you through story of the djembe drum, the basics of how to play the djembe and dunun drums (a type of drum from West Africa), and how to put the techniques together to learn ancient traditional rhythms and songs. Just like other instruments, these drums have notes that are combined to play music. We will work on the sounds of the notes and will play music that you can play alone or with other drummers. Whether you are a beginner drummer or an experienced one, join us to discover or improve your own sound on the drum, and to create music in community with others.

Classes are for all ages of drummers and all skill levels.

When: Every 3rd Saturday of the Month, starting in January 2009
Time: 2:30pm – 4pm
Cost: $15 per class.
Where: Radiance, 9 W Grant St, Lancaster (across from Central Market)
How to Register: Contact Radiance 717-290-1517
Dates: January 17, February 21, March 21, April 18, May 16

If you don't have a djembe, dunun (barrel-shaped stick drum), or ashiko drum, you can rent a djembe for $2 (technique instruction is focused on these drums, but you may also bring frame drums to play during the rhythms). Please request rental drums ahead of time for each class.

Classes Led by Tammi Hessen, a Lancaster-based drummer who has been studying in the West African hand drum tradition of djembe. She has traveled to Africa to study drumming there, studies under djembe master Mamady Keita, and Master Drum Maker/Cultural Educator Baile McKnight. She has also studied with Menes Yahuda, Salim Ajanku of Sankofa Dance Theater, Mahiri Keita, Ubaka Hill, and other drumming instructors who travel around to teach. Tammi has been working with Ubaka Hill as her teaching assistant at the Michigan Women’s Music Festival, and recently recorded on Ubaka’s 3rd CD, “Beyond the Wind” and played at the CD Release concerts. Tammi began teaching Bumbada! Women Drumming classes in Baltimore Maryland in 2003, and the program continues to grow. She also has a performance group that plays for various events locally. Yule Forest at Radiance

The front door at Radiance opens right onto the cobblestones. Sometimes it feels like a bit of a challenge to make it feel welcoming and enticing. We're very excited about our Yule decorating though, and want to share it with the world! It's a work in process, with another tree inside on the landing & an evergreen archway to step through. Very magical. Come on in.

Radiance in the newspaper!

Yesterday afternoon, we held our 2nd anniversary celebration at Radiance. We'd invited the local artisans whose work we carry in the shop to set up their booths in the classroom, like a mini craft fair. We'd sent a notice to the newspaper for the weekly calendar of events, and they ran the listing (twice actually). Well, I guess one of the reporters thought it looked interesting so he came over & brought a photographer! They mingled, interviewed quite a few people and ran this nice article in this morning's paper. Here's a link to the article! http://articles.lancasteronline.com/local/4/230598

And here's a link to Tina Sams' blog entry about the event, with several more photos. Thanks Tina! http:theessentialherbal.blogspot.com/2008/11/radiant-artisan-festival.html

Alice Schwager Showing at Radiance

Wow! Wow! Wow! We have a collection of Alice Schwager's paintings hanging in our gallery/classroom through the end of the year. They are stunning. Artist reception will be held on First Friday in December from 5 until 8pm. In addition to the paintings, Alice will have a collection of her dolls here at Radiance for the reception.

Alice is a mixed-media visionary artist, expressing spiritual and healing themes in her art. Her intent is that when we gaze into her works, mundane thoughts dissolve for a moment and we stare into our divine cores.

A prolific painter, Alice was born in Romania, however now lives in southern Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. She describes her inspiration for her artwork as being "a force outside of herself", almost as if she were simply compelled by channeling, rather than actually creating her own artwork without some sort of inexplicable or even divine drive. Although her original use of color, collage, textures and cerebral motifs make her work identifiable and recognizable as being "her own" style, nonetheless, each one of her hundreds of paintings is truly unique, thereby reaffirming both her creative talents and endless imagination.

Reiki Shares in Lancaster

On the third Sunday afternoon of each month, Radiance is host to a Reiki Share. Usually facilitated by Marilyn Landis, who teaches the Reiki classes we offer at Radiance, the Reiki shares are open to anyone who has been attuned to at least Reiki Level One. We meet in circle first, share Reiki experiences & discuss Reiki issues, then we break into groups & exchange Reiki with each other. Each person has the opportunity to receive Reiki as well as giving it to others in the group. The Share is from 1:30 until 4pm on the 3rd Sunday of each month.

Reiki Share Lancaster also hosts a yahoo group, which sends reminders of the monthly Shares, and allows us to request distance Reiki (for ourselves or others) from the group between meetings. If you would like to subscribe to the Reiki Share Lancaster group, you can email a request for an invitation to LabyrinthHerbs@aol.com or MarilynJude@aol.com .

Fairy Nests

If you've been to Radiance, you've probably seen some of Lisa Mercer's artwork. She makes all sorts of wonderful things from found and recycled items. Earlier this week, Lisa came in with a case full of "Fairy Nests". Mostly made with small recycled baskets, wool roving, feathers and found treasures, these tiny works of art are lovely. Perfect for a fairy corner, altar or indoor garden. My photos don't do them justice, I'm afraid. People have been oohing and aahing over them ever since they arrived. Stop in soon - I don't think these will be here for long! And while you're here, you'll want to look at our amazing selection of fairy figurines. We have Flower Garden Fairies, Amy Brown Faeries and some delightful Forest Faeries.

Brazilwood is in the dye pot!

Almost since we opened Radiance, we've had a small selection of beautiful hand-dyed and spun yarns from Rachel-Marie (http://knittydirtygirl.livejournal.com/). Really, they are works of art. Yesterday, she stopped in and we made a trade. I gave her a selection of dyeing herbs & she gave me some amazing yarn & a book with patterns & photos of all sorts of hand knit items made with handspun yarns - including some of hers!

Today I've been working a dye pot with Brazilwood. Colors ranging from coral to pink so far. Stop by the shop to see the new pieces! There are some little girls dresses, knit skirts, a silk camisole (of course - I don't think I've ever set up a dye pot without dyeing some camisoles). I also dyed a long flag-style banner. Padmani Kaur, our yoga teacher, is going to put some lettering on it & eventually we'll hang it outside from our upstairs window.

Fair Trade Day 2008!

This Saturday, May 10, is International Fair Trade Day. It's a great day to raise public awareness of the importance of Fair Trade in the world economies. Fair Trade means that a fair, living wage is paid directly to artisans, collectives or small farmers around the world. It's a way that we can support and participate in local economies worldwide.

Most people are familiar with Fair Trade Coffee and Tea, but did you know that there are certified Fair Trade Chocolates? And lots of hand-crafted items, too.

In our shop, we always carry hand-woven traditional market baskets from a women's collective in Ghana. This 20-year-old collective has completely changed the economy of the villages where they are made. All of the children now attend public school, there are clean public wells for water, and health clinics. All because the women of the village can make fair pay for making traditional crafts from their own homes.

From Nepal, we have bags woven from hemp & purses made of recycled silk saris. We have beautiful sterling silver and stone earrings from Nepal, India and Chile. From Bali we have capiz shell wind chimes and beautiful parasols. And from Indonesia, we have hand-batiked clothing!

Come see us on Saturday, either at our shop, Radiance, right across the cobblestones from Central market in downtown Lancaster, or at the Landis Valley Herb Fair just north of Lancaster! Purchase any Fair Trade item and receive a free postcard about Fair Trade and a sticker to let others know that you participated in Fair Trade Day!

This exhibit will be in the gallery through the end of May, 2008. We will have an artist reception (including live music from Ben Weiss & Joel Fath) in concert with the First Friday activities in downtown Lancaster. The reception will be from 5-8 pm on Friday, May 2.

Mary will also be here during Artwalk weekend, which is April 19 & 20, and in addition to the framed pieces in the show, she will be offering t-shirts with her trees appliqued on them!

Radiance has carried notecards made from Mary's watercolors, and always has a selection of those in the shop.

Radiance Road Trip to Snatam Kaur Concert

On Saturday evening, a group of us from the Kundalini Yoga classes at Radiance carpooled to Philadelphia for a wonderful concert at the First Unitarian Church on Chestnut St. It had rained off & on all day, the wind was whipping around, the skies were dark gray & flooding was threathened. We bravely set out on the turnpike anyway, because Snatam Kaur and the Celebrate Peace band were playing & singing. Other members of the band are GuruGanesha Singh, Manish Vyas and Tanmayo. The night was advertised as a combination "concert, chantfest, musical group meditation, a yoga class in melody" & it truly was an ecstatic experience.

Padmani (the Kundalini teacher at Radiance) often plays Snatam's music during the meditation portion of our yoga classes, and we often play her cd's in the shop as well, so we all have some degree of familiarity with her crystal clear voice, and many of the chants she led us in singing.

Here's a link to clips from the Celebrate Peace cd. Ong Namo is the chant we use at the beginning of each yoga class, to call in the wisdom of the lineage of teachers and create a safe space in which to practice the yoga. It's very similar to what we do in Reclaiming Tradition to begin a sacred ceremony or ritual, when we Cast a Circle, and call to the Elemental Guardians and Ancestors. In each case we create a container of safe and sacred space in which to do our work, and then call for support and assistance from ancestral teachers/protectors. Interesting similarities.

It's a Sheet of Ice Out There!

It's looking less and less likely that we'll be opening the shop today at all.

It's supposed to warm up (well, to above freezing) later, so I'm expecting that we'll be there tomorrow without any trouble.

Outside my windows it's just ice & sleet. It looks almost pretty from in here, but I have no desire to be out in the mess. See you tomorrow!

The Healing Altar at Radiance

Each morning after we arrive at Radiance, and get settled in, we light a candle on the altar. We keep a beautiful Blessing Bowl there, and read through all of the prayers each day. Some of the blessings are healing prayers that someone has asked for, some are for Peace or Justice, some are pleas that someone has left in the bowl. Because we often offer to put something in the Blessing Bowl when someone we encounter has a need, I felt that it would be good to post a photo of the altar here, so that you might see what it looks like. Of course, it changes with the seasons, but you get the idea. Right now we have a small runner-type cloth on the table, but sometimes we have elaborate scarves.

I'll tell you what's on the altar, at the moment, so you can tell what the individual pieces are in the photo. On the far left is a statue of Ganesh, the remover of obstacles. He's holding a couple of calendula flowers and has a little string of prayer flags that Ember (age 7) made for him. Beside him is a gourd & in front of him is a carved box for burning incense. To the right is a bottle of Ganga Water, holy water from the headwaters of the Ganges river. Next is a little enamel fire box with a dragon on it - I keep matches in it. Then comes an exquisite porcelain statue of Quan Yin seated on an elephant. In front of Quan Yin is the Blessing Bowl - made of alabaster and painted with henna. Beside her is the candle & a wonderful root that someone gifted us with. One the far left is a statue of the triple goddess, Brigid & a small round mirror at her feet to symbolize her sacred well.

So, if you ever want to ask us to put a message for you in our Blessing Bowl, now you have an idea of the setting!

Blessed Be!

The Queen of My Self: a workshop with Mama Donna Henes, the urban shaman

The Queen of My Self: Stepping into Sovereignty in Midlife

An empowering workshop with Donna Henes

Based on her award-winning book from Monarch Press

Throngs of female Baby Boomers are now entering midlife. We are unique in history for our freedom, education, longevity and wealth. We hold positions of unheard of responsibility and stature. We are no longer Maidens, nor Mothers, and not yet old Crones. So where do we fit in the spectrum of women's lives? We are poised on the brink of a new, exciting, and as yet uncharted, stage of life. We are pumped and primed for personal sovereignty. Make way for the Queen —the new inspirational archetype for Women of Power. Come and join your spirit with other incredible, mature, accomplished women. Meet and celebrate the Queen in yourself as we share a spirited and profound mythological, philosophical and ritual exchange.

In a ceremonial counsel of encouragement and support, we will summon, name, and claim the wealth of our experience, our resources, and our best intentions. We will drum up the passions to fuel our potent midlife transition and chant for the persistence to maintain it. Our gathering will culminate with a Royal Coronation Ceremony wherein we will crown ourselves our own power and authority.

Turn your midlife crisis into your Crowning Achievement! The Queen is the earthly ruler of all Her domains. Preeminent, She is capable, accomplished, assured, respected, and in charge. Passionate and compassionate, She is an active woman of the world. The scope of Her natural abilities is vast and Her influence enormous. The Queen accepts and initiates personal response-ability for circumstances and conditions in ever-expanding circles. The chief dispenser of order, measure, justice, and right relationship in all realms, Her rule is informed by Her keen cosmic perspective as well as the heart-felt promptings of Her own intuition. She reigns supreme by virtue of Her great virtue. Today, just as the accumulative damage to our Earth is reaching a perilous point of no return and our entire natural and cultural environment is in the throes of dangerous disconnection and dis-ease, we Women of a Certain Age are called upon to ascend the throne of conscious and conscientious leadership and exercise our special Queenly powers to redeem and transform ourselves, our society and our planet.

Long live the queens! May we rule in a peaceful world!* As for age. If you feel like you are on the cusp of becoming the Queen of Your Self, then you are! We Queens have visions to create, projects to develop, communities to organize, a country to run, and a planet ot protect.
