Building a Mesa with shaman, Adhi Two Owls

 Thursdays, November 10 & 17, 2011 from 6 to 9pm, at Radiance in Lancaster

The Mesa, a sacred bundle, is the map which represents the Shaman’s Universe.  Much like an organic altar, it contains the energies that are used to support the work. What goes in a Mesa is very important and must adhere to specific energetic principles.  The Mesa is the mandala of manifestation.  Creating one is a powerful way of bringing many energies together to focus on transformation.  In this two-part class, participants will learn the process of creating a “Mesa” or sacred bundle to use as part of their Shaman training.
While this workshop is open to anyone with an interest, it is also designed to be part of an ongoing series of classes in shamanism. What participants learn here will develop and grow as they continue to study. All the tools that the Shaman creates move them closer to initiation.
Bring to the first class:
one square yard of wool fabric (it can have a print) in white, blue or green,
sewing needle & scissors,
notebook or journal
A yoga mat and/or blanket to sit on
Your rattle if you have already made one.
White Sage, Tobacco, Copal and Balm of Gilead.
Class will be held at Radiance, 9 W Grant St, Lancaster, PA, across the cobblestones from Central Market.  Stop in or phone 717-290-1517 to register.  Cost is $85.00 in advance, $95.00 on the day of class.  All of the herbs listed are available for purchase at Radiance.

Adhi has been studying shamanism for 20 years.  She draws from many different teachers and their wisdom.  Adhi is an engaging teacher, accomplished artist, energy worker, Radiesthesiologist (vibrational dowser), and researcher. Her primary area of study is sacred objects, ritual items, magical tools and the temple sciences that guide them. She has spent that last 2 decades understanding deeper patterns and energies that make them work. Adhi's formal training is from the Kansas City Art Institute. Other training is in Bio-geometry, Reiki, Shamanism, Buddhism, and advanced energy sciences. Adhi travels and teaches all over the world.

Rhythms of the Earth: a Drumming Journey Around the Wheel of the Year

Come explore the ancient rhythms within yourself!  Rhythms of the Earth will combine the story of the djembe drum, the basics of how to play the djembe and dunun drums (a type of drum from West Africa), and how to put the techniques together to learn ancient traditional rhythms and songs. All this within the theme of the Wheel of the Year!  Each month we will explore rhythms and lore that express the changes in the natural world around us.

Just like other instruments, these drums have notes that are combined to play music. We will work on the sounds of the notes and will play music that you can play alone or with other drummers. Whether you are a beginner drummer or an experienced one, join us to discover or improve your own sound on the drum, and to create music in community with others.

Classes are for all ages of drummers and all skill levels.

When:  Usually the second Saturday afternoon of each month
Time: 2pm – 3:30pm
Cost: $15 per class, $75 in advance for a six-class card. $2 per class for drum rental
Where:  Radiance, 9 W Grant St, Lancaster (across from Central Market)
How to Register: Contact Radiance 717-290-1517
Dates:  October 8, 2011
  November 5
  December 17
  2012 dates TBA soon!

If you don't have a djembe, dunun (barrel-shaped stick drum), or ashiko drum, you can rent a djembe for $2 (technique instruction is focused on these drums, but you may also bring frame drums to play during the rhythms). Please request rental drums ahead of time for each class.

Circle-style classes are led by Tammi Hessen, a Lancaster-based drummer who has been studying in the West African hand drum tradition of djembe.  She has traveled many times to Africa to study drumming under djembe master Mamady Keita, and Master Drum Maker/Cultural Educator Baile McKnight. She has also studied with Menes Yahuda, Salim Ajanku of Sankofa Dance Theater, Mahiri Keita, Ubaka Hill, and other drumming instructors.   She also has a performance group that plays for various events locally.

Tammi currently teaches classes in Lancaster, Reading, Harrisburg, and Baltimore, and drums for local West African Dance Classes. For more information, www.tammihessen.com

Radiant Crystal Brew!

Kara and Nicki recently went shopping for crystals & found some really wonderful, slightly larger tumbles.  We've blended some of them on a jar together and developed a new signature crystal mix to represent Radiance.  As Nicki says: ... a safe, grounded place where people can open themselves to ancient lessons and higher wisdom, where they are free to talk and ask and learn, and where they can see there is more for all of us.

Radiant Crystal Brew is a healing mix, one that asks us to be honest with ourselves, and to remember the importance of those around us.  It keeps us strong in our journey together...

Blue Lace Agate
Pisces
Throat Chakra
A soothing, healing stone, blue lace agate opens us to higher energies while neutralizing anger from suppressed or repressed feelings of inadequacy. When we are free from the fear of judgment and filled with self-acceptance, the door for personal expression is wide open.

Aquamarine
Gemini, Pisces, Aries
Solar Plexus, Heart, Throat
Aquamarine is known as the stone of courage. It's calming, harmonizing effects assist those overwhelmed by responsibility. It clears away extraneous, unneeded thoughts, leaving a clarified perception, which makes it exceptional for meditation. It is a link to a higher knowledge and consciousness, as well as a stone of human service and well-being.

Lapis Lazuli
Sagittarius
Throat, Third Eye
Lapis lazuli connects us to ancient wisdom. The deep peace and personal power shown through this stone allow us to connect to the lessons of those before us and utilize them in the future. We are shown the truth, and we are able to accept it.

Malachite
Capricorn, Scorpio
Throat, Heart, Third Eye
The intensity of malachite is due to it's power to amplify. A strong grounding stone, it brings insight into the light, making it extremely useful for psychic endeavors. Malachite will show worthless patterns and obstacles in the spiritual path and assist in overcoming them. Used carefully with other stones, it can act as a "bullhorn" for the traits they provide, creating a stronger affect.

Tiger Eye
Capricorn
Base, Solar Plexus, Third Eye
A stone of the sun and the earth, tiger eye can be used to draw energy up or down. It is a grounding stone, but it also assists in the rise of Kundalini energy. It displays the correct use of power, and it supports integrity. It allows us to see the whole picture by connecting the physical and spiritual bodies, and it stimulates the actions needed to advance.

Dragon Stone
A recent discovery, dragon stone is a form of red and green jasper. It is useful in connecting the physical and spiritual bodies, and it allows for an internal "reset". It helps break old, unhealthy habits and assists in sticking to new ones. It provides self-confidence and loyalty to humanity, with the strength to make real changes.

A Night of Kirtan with Gurunater Kaur

Meditation doesn't come easily for many people.  Kirtan - one of the oldest sacred music traditions of the world - offers another method.  Kirtan is a call-and-response style of singing sacred chants.   Kirtan carries us effortlessly to a place of quiet, to stillness.  While it is true that we can sing these chants in the solitude of our own homes, there is nothing like the magic of chanting live with musicians and other participants all adding their energies to the experience.
It’s the heart, not the art.   The purpose of Kirtan is to get us out of our heads and into our hearts.
Chants heal.
The powerful healing and transformational energies of these ancient chants can help to reconnect us to the Ever-Present and Eternal Being that lies within us all. All the mantras, melodies, and instruments of Kirtan are designed to lead us toward this meditative state.
The beauty of relaxation.
Kirtan brings us back to our center. When this happens, beautiful things begin to unfold. Feelings of inspiration, peace, and a sense of connectedness are common experiences.
Come, sing with us.  Friday evening, October 21, 2011, 6:30-7:45pm, at Radiance, 9 W Grant St, Lancaster, PA, across the cobblestones from Central Market.
Bring a blanket and/or yoga mat to sit on, a pillow if it helps you to sit on the floor with more comfort, and dress in layers.
Cost is $15 in advance, $20 that evening.  Call Radiance, 717-290-1517, or stop in to register.
